Not all paint correction is performed the same way.


The term “paint correction” is now used for everything from a quick pass with a dual-action polisher to an advanced multi-stage correction involving wet-sanding, rotary compounding and several refinement stages. Although both processes may improve gloss, they are not technically equal and cannot produce the same level of defect removal.


Professional paint correction is not based on one machine, one pad or one bottle of compound. It requires selecting the proper polisher, pad size, pad material, backing plate and abrasive for each panel, paint system and type of defect.


At Scott’s Custom Auto Spa & Ceramic Coatings, our correction equipment includes rotary polishers ranging from 1 to 7 inches and dual-action polishers ranging from 1 to 6 inches. We also maintain thousands of dollars’ worth of wool, microfibre and foam pads in different sizes and styles, together with numerous rigid, medium and flexible backing plates.


Different cutting compounds and finishing polishes are also required because no single product performs perfectly on every paint system.

Because no single machine, pad, backing plate or compound can properly correct every part of a modern vehicle.

What Is Professional Paint Correction?


Professional paint correction is the controlled removal or permanent reduction of defects within the painted finish.


Depending on the vehicle, these defects may include:


  • Swirl marks

  • Automated car-wash damage

  • Rotary holograms and buffer trails

  • Oxidation and paint haze

  • Water-spot etching

  • Bird-dropping and environmental etching

  • Improper dealership polishing

  • Repainting and body-shop defects

  • Sanding marks

  • Deeper scratches and scuffs

  • Uneven texture in refinished paint


Professional correction requires much more than making paint appear shiny under ordinary shop lighting. The finish must be inspected using professional paint-correction lighting, and the results must remain visible after polishing oils and residue have been removed.


A professional paint-correction technician must also understand when a defect can be safely removed, when it should only be improved and when further correction would sacrifice too much of the remaining clear coat.


Our approach has always been to sand or correct paint to improve it—not recklessly chase every defect regardless of the available paint thickness.


A Professional Should Be Able to Show You the Process


Before entrusting someone with your vehicle, you should be able to see evidence that they have the equipment, lighting, knowledge and experience required to perform the work correctly.


Professional paint correction should not be hidden behind vague claims or a few finished photographs taken outside in flattering light.

Rotary vs. DA Polishers: What Is the Difference?


Rotary and dual-action polishers move their pads differently.


A rotary polisher directly drives the pad in one consistent circular direction. When the trigger is engaged, the pad continues rotating. This provides the technician with dependable and controllable cutting action.


A free-spinning dual-action, or DA, polisher combines orbital movement with pad rotation. However, that rotation depends on pad contact, panel shape, machine angle, pressure and pad size.


When a DA pad cannot remain sufficiently flat against the surface, its rotation can slow dramatically or stall. The machine may continue orbiting, but its effective cutting ability is greatly reduced.


This distinction becomes extremely important on today’s vehicles.


Modern Body Panels Are Not Flat


Modern vehicle designs contain increasingly complex shapes:


  • Sharp body lines

  • Deep concave areas

  • Rounded fenders

  • Sculpted doors

  • Narrow pillars

  • Curved bumpers

  • Small painted trim

  • Tight areas around handles and mirrors

  • Low rocker panels

  • Spoilers, vents and aerodynamic surfaces


A 5- or 6-inch DA polisher works most efficiently while the pad remains reasonably flat against the paint. Maintaining full and even pad contact across all these contours can be nearly impossible.


As the pad moves onto a curve or body line, one side may lift or receive more pressure. A free-spinning DA can then stop rotating properly and continue only its orbital movement. The machine is still moving, but its ability to perform consistent defect removal has been substantially reduced.


This can leave uneven correction, especially around contours, edges and recessed sections.


Why We Use Rotary Polishers for Cutting


A rotary polisher provides direct and consistent pad rotation. Its cutting ability is not dependent on the pad freely rotating through orbital movement.


This allows an experienced technician to maintain cutting action across changing panel shapes and intentionally control which portion of the pad contacts the paint.


Rotary polishers provide several important advantages during serious defect removal:


  • Consistent rotation across contours

  • Predictable cutting action

  • Efficient removal of sanding marks

  • Better control on curved panels

  • Effective use of wool cutting pads

  • Clearer feedback through the machine

  • A wide range of machine and pad sizes

  • Efficient correction of oxidation and deeper defects


Rotary polishers have traditionally been used in professional refinishing and body-shop environments because freshly painted and wet-sanded finishes require reliable cutting action.


After sanding, the technician must remove the sanding pattern evenly without creating unnecessary additional paint removal. That requires a machine that continues to cut when the panel is curved—not one whose pad rotation may stall when it cannot remain flat.


Can a Rotary Polisher Finish Paint?


Absolutely.


A rotary is often described only as an aggressive cutting machine, but that is an oversimplification.


In experienced hands, a rotary can cut, polish and finish paint beautifully. The result depends on the technician’s technique, pad selection, backing plate, polish, machine speed, pressure and understanding of the particular paint system.


Some paints can be finished perfectly with a rotary. Other paints—especially softer or more sensitive finishes—may benefit from a subsequent DA refinement stage.


The rotary is not automatically dangerous, nor is the DA automatically safe. Either machine can generate heat or remove unnecessary paint when used improperly.


Professional correction is determined by the technician’s knowledge and control—not simply by the type of machine being held.


Where DA Polishers Fit Into Our Process


DA polishers have a valuable purpose in professional paint correction.


At Scott’s Custom Auto Spa, we primarily use rotary polishers for controlled cutting and defect removal. DA polishers are then used where appropriate to refine the finish further.

A DA can be particularly useful for:


  • Refining paint after a rotary cutting stage

  • Removing extremely fine residual haze

  • Finishing certain soft or sensitive paint systems

  • Performing a final polishing step

  • Working areas where its movement and pad size suit the panel


We do not believe the choice should simply be rotary or DA. A complete professional correction system includes both.


The difference is knowing which machine should be used, where it should be used and what result it is expected to produce.


What About Forced-Rotation DA Polishers?


A forced-rotation DA is a significant improvement over a free-spinning DA for consistent correction.


Unlike a conventional free-spinning machine, its pad is mechanically driven and is far less likely to stop rotating on a contour. This makes it more capable of sustained correction.


However, most forced-rotation polishers are primarily designed around 5- or 6-inch pads. That can still limit their effectiveness on narrow pillars, tight bumpers, complex contours and small painted areas.


Forced rotation is another useful tool, but it does not replace the flexibility of having numerous rotary and DA polishers in several sizes.


Why Polisher and Pad Size Matter


Attempting to correct an entire vehicle with one 5- or 6-inch machine forces the technician to work within the limitations of that tool.


We use rotary polishers in:


  • 1-inch

  • 2-inch

  • 3-inch

  • 5-inch

  • 6-inch

  • 7-inch sizes


We also use DA polishers in:


  • 1-inch

  • 2-inch

  • 3-inch

  • 5-inch

  • 6-inch sizes


Smaller machines allow us to correct narrow pillars, bumpers, curved sections, areas around handles and other tight surfaces more accurately. Larger machines provide efficient and even correction across suitable open panels.


The machine must fit the panel. The panel should not be forced to fit the machine.


Why Professional Shops Need So Many Pads


Pad selection can dramatically change the performance of a compound or polish.

Professional correction may require:


  • Twisted or knitted wool pads

  • Lambswool pads

  • Short- and long-fiber wool pads

  • Microfibre cutting and finishing pads

  • Heavy-cut foam

  • Medium-cut foam

  • Polishing foam

  • Ultra-soft finishing foam

  • Different pad densities and face designs

  • Multiple sizes of each pad style


Even two pads that appear similar can react differently depending on the paint, compound, machine and correction stage.


Pads also become loaded with removed paint, abrasive residue and contamination during correction. Professional work requires pads to be cleaned regularly and changed throughout the job—not one pad being used around an entire vehicle.


Thousands of dollars can be invested in pad sizes and styles before compounds, polishers, backing plates, lighting and paint-measuring equipment are even considered.

Why Backing-Plate Size and Flexibility Matter


The backing plate connects the polishing pad to the machine, but it does much more than simply hold the pad in position.


Backing plates are available in different:


  • Diameters

  • Thicknesses

  • Firmness levels

  • Flexibility levels

  • Edge designs

  • Mounting styles


A firm backing plate transfers machine movement more directly and can provide stronger, more consistent cutting on a suitable surface. A flexible backing plate can better follow certain contours and soften the transition as the pad travels across a curved panel.


However, too much flexibility may reduce cutting consistency, while a plate that is too rigid may not suit a complex contour. The backing plate must also be correctly sized for the pad so the technician maintains proper support and control.


This is another reason one polisher and one backing plate cannot properly handle every area of a vehicle.

Diminishing vs. Non-Diminishing Abrasives


The abrasive technology inside a compound is just as important as the machine applying it.


What Are Diminishing Abrasives?


Diminishing abrasives are designed to begin with a more aggressive cut and gradually break down into smaller particles as they are worked.


As the abrasives diminish, their ability to remove defects decreases. After several working passes—often approximately four passes with certain products—much of the initial cutting ability may be gone. Continuing to polish does not necessarily mean the product is continuing to remove defects at the same rate.


Diminishing compounds and polishes can be useful, particularly for finishing or on certain softer paint systems. We use selected diminishing polishes when their finishing characteristics are beneficial.


However, they are not always our preferred choice for serious defect removal or sanding-mark removal.


What Are Non-Diminishing Abrasives?


Non-diminishing abrasives maintain a more consistent particle size and cutting ability throughout their working cycle.


Instead of relying on the abrasives to break down, the technician controls the result through:


  • Machine speed

  • Arm speed

  • Pressure

  • Pad selection

  • Backing-plate selection

  • Number of passes

  • Working time

  • Compound amount

  • Inspection between stages


This provides more sustained and predictable correction when removing heavy defects, oxidation or sanding marks.


For our initial cutting stages, we commonly favour a rotary polisher, wool pad and suitable non-diminishing heavy-cut compound. This provides the consistent correction necessary before moving into further polishing and refinement.



Why One Compound Cannot Correct Every Paint


Automotive paint varies significantly among manufacturers, individual vehicles and refinished panels.


One vehicle may have harder clear coat requiring substantial cutting. Another may have soft paint that corrects quickly but develops haze easily. A repainted panel may react completely differently from the factory finish beside it.


Humidity, temperature, pad choice, backing-plate flexibility and paint condition can also change how a compound performs.


That is why professional correction requires multiple compounds and polishes. There is no single bottle that provides the ideal cut, working time and finish on every paint system.


A technician must test the paint, inspect the result and adjust the process.


The Problem With Fillers and Polishing Oils


Some compounds and all-in-one products can make defects appear reduced by leaving oils, resins or fillers behind.


Under ordinary lighting, the paint may look glossy and corrected. After the vehicle is washed or chemically cleaned, however, some of the original defects can reappear.


Permanent paint correction requires inspecting the finish after residue and polishing oils have been removed. Before installing a professional ceramic coating, the surface must also be properly cleaned so the coating bonds directly to the prepared paint.


Gloss alone does not prove that defects were removed.


Why Paint-Thickness Measurement Is Important


Paint correction removes a microscopic amount of the painted finish to level or reduce defects. Wet-sanding can remove more material, which makes paint-thickness measurement especially important.


This becomes especially important when correcting older, classic and collector vehicle finishes.


We use paint-thickness gauges to take multiple readings around the vehicle. This helps identify:


  • Variations in paint thickness

  • Possible refinished panels

  • Areas that may have been previously sanded or polished

  • Unusually thin or thick readings

  • Differences between adjacent panels

  • Areas requiring a more conservative approach


A paint gauge does not provide every answer. Conventional readings generally show the combined coating thickness above the metal substrate rather than isolating the exact amount of clear coat remaining.


However, the readings provide valuable information when combined with experience, inspection and knowledge of the vehicle’s history.


Measurements help guide the process, but professional judgement determines whether a defect should be removed, improved or left alone.

Wet-Sanding Requires a Complete Correction System


Wet-sanding is an advanced paint-correction process used to level certain defects that polishing alone cannot remove efficiently.


Depending on the paint condition and available film thickness, controlled wet-sanding may be used to improve:


  • Deeper scratches

  • Severe etching

  • Repainting texture

  • Dirt nibs

  • Isolated defects

  • Previous sanding marks

  • Other imperfections that sit deeper within the finish


Paint-depth measurements and visual inspection must be completed before sanding. Even then, the objective may be to improve a defect rather than remove it completely.


Once paint has been sanded, the sanding marks must be fully and evenly corrected.

A completely wet-sanded paint finish cannot be restored properly by simply making a few passes with one large DA polisher. Every sanding mark must be addressed across broad panels, contours, bumpers, pillars and tight areas.


Our process can include:


  1. Inspecting and measuring the paint

  2. Selecting an appropriate sanding grade and method

  3. Controlled wet-sanding

  4. Rotary cutting with wool and a suitable compound

  5. Additional rotary correction where required

  6. DA or rotary refinement depending on the paint

  7. Final polishing and inspection

  8. Panel cleansing before ceramic coating installation


Removing sanding marks requires sustained, dependable cutting action. This is where rotary polishers, correctly sized pads, suitable backing plates and non-diminishing abrasives become especially important.


Why a Hoist Is Important for Proper Paint Correction


Rockers, lower doors, bumper sections and other low areas are still part of the vehicle’s painted finish. They should not receive less attention simply because they are difficult to see or reach while the vehicle is sitting on the floor.


A hoist allows the vehicle to be raised to the proper working height so the technician can:


  • See lower-panel defects clearly

  • Position professional inspection lighting correctly

  • Keep the polishing pad controlled and properly aligned

  • Select the appropriate machine for each contour

  • Correct rocker panels and lower doors more evenly

  • Inspect the finish from the proper angle

  • Prepare and ceramic coat lower areas thoroughly

  • Avoid trying to polish while kneeling, reaching or working blindly


Proper working height also allows the technician to maintain better control over the machine, pad and pressure.


A hoist is not simply a convenience. It is an important part of correcting and ceramic coating lower rocker panels properly.


If the lower portions of the vehicle cannot be clearly illuminated, comfortably reached and closely inspected, it becomes much more difficult to correct them to the same standard as the hood or upper doors.


Professional Paint-Inspection Lighting


Ordinary ceiling lights, outdoor shade and cloudy-day photographs are not enough to evaluate paint correction properly.


Professional paint-inspection lighting reveals defects that softer or diffused lighting may hide, including:


  • Fine swirls

  • Rotary holograms

  • DA haze

  • Sanding marks

  • Compound residue

  • High spots

  • Uneven correction

  • Remaining scratches and etching

Lighting helps determine whether the selected machine, pad, backing plate and compound are producing the intended result. It also helps identify when another correction or refinement stage is required.


If defects cannot be seen clearly, they cannot be corrected consistently.


Paint Correction Is More Than Owning a Polisher


A DA polisher can improve gloss and reduce light defects. That does not mean every polishing service is equivalent to professional multi-stage paint correction.


A complete professional correction system requires:


  • Multiple rotary and DA polishers

  • Machines and pads sized for different panels

  • Firm and flexible backing plates in multiple sizes

  • Wool, microfibre and foam pads

  • Multiple compounds and finishing polishes

  • Paint-thickness measurement

  • Electric or pneumatic sanding equipment

  • Professional paint-inspection lighting

  • A hoist for lower-panel access

  • Controlled working conditions

  • Proper surface preparation

  • Experience with factory and refinished paint

  • The ability to wet-sand and remove sanding marks safely

  • The judgement to know when to stop


Professional paint correction is not about using the most aggressive process possible. It is about achieving the best safe result while preserving the painted finish.

We primarily use rotary machines for consistent, controlled cutting and DA polishers where they provide an advantage during refinement. Each machine, pad, backing plate and abrasive is selected according to the panel shape, paint system and defects being corrected.


Our fully climate-controlled studio, vehicle hoist, professional paint-inspection lighting, paint-measuring equipment and extensive correction system allow us to perform everything from refinement polishing to advanced multi-stage and completely wet-sanded paint corrections.


Clients are welcome to see our polishers, pads, compounds, backing plates, paint gauges, sanders, lighting and correction equipment. We believe a professional should be able to explain and demonstrate how the work will be performed.


The goal is not simply to make the vehicle look glossy when it leaves.


The goal is to produce a properly corrected finish that can be inspected honestly before it is protected with a professional ceramic coating.

What equipment should a professional paint-correction technician have?


A professional should have rotary and DA polishers in appropriate sizes, a substantial selection of wool, microfibre and foam pads, firm and flexible backing plates, multiple compounds and finishing polishes, paint-thickness gauges, sanding equipment and professional paint-inspection lighting.


For complete vehicle correction, access to a hoist is also extremely valuable for properly correcting, inspecting and ceramic coating lower rocker panels.

Is a DA polisher safer than a rotary polisher?


A DA is generally easier for an inexperienced operator to control, but that does not make it incapable of causing damage. A DA equipped with an aggressive microfibre pad and compound can generate considerable heat and remove paint quickly.


Safety depends on technique, pad choice, backing plate, abrasive choice, paint thickness and experience.


Why can a DA polisher stop rotating?


A free-spinning DA relies on pad contact and momentum to maintain rotation. When a large pad is tilted against a contour, body line or tight curve, its rotation can slow or stall. The orbital movement may continue, but its effective correction ability is dramatically reduced.


Is a rotary polisher only used for heavy cutting?


No. A rotary can be used for heavy correction, intermediate polishing and final finishing. An experienced technician can produce an excellent finish with a rotary by selecting the appropriate pad, backing plate, polish, speed and technique.


Is a forced-rotation DA better than a free-spinning DA?


A forced-rotation DA provides more consistent correction because the pad is mechanically driven and is much less likely to stall. However, most forced-rotation machines use 5- or 6-inch pads, so additional machines and pad sizes are still required for complex modern panels.


Why do you use both rotary and DA polishers?

Can every scratch be completely removed?

We correct or improve defects without sacrificing unnecessary clear coat.


Can a completely wet-sanded vehicle be paint corrected?


Yes, provided the finish has enough workable paint thickness and the sanding and correction are performed correctly.


Restoring a fully sanded finish requires multiple machine and pad sizes, suitable backing plates, rotary cutting, appropriate abrasives and several inspection and refinement stages.


Should paint correction be completed before ceramic coating?


Yes. Ceramic coating adds protection and enhances the prepared finish, but it does not remove swirls, sanding marks, oxidation, scratches or buffer trails.


Those defects must be corrected before the coating is installed.
